Spyderco’s Byrd line is a cost effective alternative to their main CLIPIT-line of high performance knives that stand independently on their own design, performance merits and high level of manufacturing. The “comet” shaped opening hole is a trademark of the Byrd line and is synonymous with the stringent quality requirements, high performance materials and manufacturing, which go into every knife. These Byrd knives use 8Cr13MoV stainless steel for the blade, which is similar to AUS-8 in its properties, performance and function. 8Cr13MoV steel contains both molybdenum and vanadium. Molybdenum enhances strength and hardness, vanadium its wear resistance and toughness. Carbon augments tensile strength and increases wear resistance. The blade steel, available with a plain or combination plain/serrated edge, retains a sharp cutting edge over time and use.
